How Spotify royalties actually work

Spotify does not pay a fixed per-stream rate. It pools all subscription and ad revenue in a country each month, subtracts operating costs and rights-holder shares, then divides the remainder proportionally across every stream. That's why a stream from the United States often earns ~$0.004 while a stream from India earns closer to $0.0007 — the pool is smaller and Premium prices are lower.

The five things that move your rate

  • Country: Norway, Switzerland, and Denmark pay ~10-30% above the US. India, Turkey, and Vietnam pay a fraction.
  • Free vs Premium: Premium streams earn 3-5× more than ad-supported streams.
  • Discovery Mode: Trades ~30% of your royalty for algorithmic push. Great for testing, expensive to leave on.
  • Distributor fee: DistroKid takes 0%, TuneCore/CD Baby take 10-15%, most label deals take 15-50%.
  • Publishing splits: If you don't own your masters or publishing, your effective rate drops further.

How to read the calculator

  1. Pick the country your listeners are actually in — not where you live.
  2. Enter total streams (from Spotify for Artists → Audience → Country).
  3. Set your distributor cut (check your latest statement).
  4. "Your cut" is what lands in your bank after the distributor — before tax.

Common myths

  • "1 million streams = $4,000." Only if every stream is US Premium. Global mix usually lands $1,500–$3,500.
  • "Bots pay the same." They pay zero — Spotify strips detected artificial streams and can charge back your distributor.
  • "Playlists don't matter." Real editorial and human playlists are the single fastest way to move country mix toward higher-paying markets.
